What is an Organization Banding Policy?

Organizations usually group employees by their roles and responsibilities, and that grouping is what's called organization banding. Since different roles carry different levels of responsibility, bands give the organization a consistent way to plan and communicate about where people sit, treating everyone within the same band the same way.

Banding works differently from a traditional, more granular salary structure. Instead of a long list of narrowly defined job grades, it groups people into broader bands, which reduces how much weight "status" or hierarchy carries and puts more emphasis on lateral movement between roles. That makes it easier to reward someone for taking on new skills or moving sideways, rather than pay progress depending almost entirely on getting promoted, the way it usually does under a traditional multi-grade structure.

The tradeoff is that this flexibility can create friction around internal pay comparisons, since there's less fine-grained control over salary progression than a traditional grading structure gives you. This policy sets out the bands and grades the organization uses.
