Work Authorization
Work authorization is legal permission granted by the U.S. government that allows someone to work lawfully in the United States. It applies to U.S. citizens, who are automatically authorized to work, as well as lawful permanent residents and individuals with temporary permits, such as visa holders or asylum seekers. Employers must verify each employee’s work authorization before hiring and keep records proving compliance with federal immigration law.
HR departments handle this verification through Form I-9, which requires employees to provide acceptable documents proving their identity and eligibility to work. Common documents include a U.S. passport, a driver’s license combined with a Social Security card, or an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) for temporary workers.
