Updated on: October 14, 2026 Sneha Gondhale 1 min read

TAN, short for Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number, is a unique ten-character alphanumeric code issued by the Income Tax Department to individuals or entities required to deduct or collect tax at the source.

It is used to track and record source-based tax deductions, such as TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) on salaries, payments to contractors, and interest income.
