Supplemental Wages

Updated on: October 14, 2026 Sneha Gondhale 1 min read

Supplemental wages are any form of compensation an employee receives in addition to their regular salary or hourly pay. This can include payments like bonuses, commissions, overtime, and gratuities. While many of these payments are processed outside the normal payroll schedule, others, such as overtime and commissions, are often included in a regular paycheck.

Common examples of supplemental pay include annual bonuses, performance incentives, sales commissions, joining bonuses, retention payments, overtime compensation, festival bonuses, gratuity payments, leave encashment, stock option gains, and awards or prizes. Each type serves a different business purpose and triggers its own tax obligations under Indian tax law.

Taxation of supplemental wages follows the Income Tax Act, which adds these payments to regular salary for the purpose of calculating tax. Employers must deduct TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) based on the employee’s applicable tax slab, since these payments are fully taxable as salary income in the hands of employees.
