Social Networking

Updated on: October 14, 2026 Sneha Gondhale 1 min read

Social networking is the building of online communities among people who share common interests, professional backgrounds, or goals. Platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram facilitate these interconnected networks, letting people connect, share updates, and build relationships outside of in-person settings.

HR departments have increasingly incorporated social networking into the recruiting process, using it to source candidates, evaluate a person’s professional presence, and engage with potential hires before they ever formally apply. Platforms like LinkedIn in particular have become a primary channel for sourcing passive candidates and building a company’s employer brand.

Beyond recruiting, social networking also supports employee referral programs, professional development through industry groups and communities, and ongoing visibility into talent market trends, giving HR teams another lens on where the best candidates are and what they care about.
