Provisional Credit

Updated on: October 14, 2026 Sneha Gondhale 1 min read

Provisional credit is a temporary credit that banks give customers while they investigate disputed transactions or chargebacks. It protects consumers and businesses when unauthorized charges or billing errors show up on their accounts.

Banks and credit card companies provide provisional credit to maintain customer trust and to comply with federal regulations that protect cardholders from fraud. It acts as an immediate safeguard: customers can access their funds while the dispute goes through a full review.
