Protected Classes
Protected classes are categories of people protected under federal, state, or local law from discrimination based on traits like race, religion, sex, national origin, age, and disability. These protections apply in employment, housing, education, and other areas of life.
In the workplace, protected classes are recognized under laws like Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). As a result, employment decisions such as hiring, promotion, termination, and compensation cannot legally be based on these protected traits.
Respecting protected classes matters for staying compliant with the law and for building a genuinely diverse, inclusive workplace. Organizations that fail to do so risk lawsuits, financial penalties, and serious reputational damage.
