On-Roll and Off-Roll

Updated on: October 14, 2026 Sneha Gondhale 1 min read

On-roll and off-roll describe an individual’s employment status on a company’s payroll. On-roll employees are hired directly by the company, receive regular employment benefits, and count as permanent staff.

Off-roll employees, by contrast, may be contractual, temporary, or outsourced workers. They are not on the company’s permanent payroll and are often employed through a third-party agency.
