Merit Pay

Updated on: October 14, 2026 Sneha Gondhale 1 min read

Merit pay is a system where someone gets paid based on how well they hit specific targets. It works on a metric basis: individuals get evaluated against the targets and levels in that metric, then paid or compensated accordingly.

For example, say a company has a sales team being rewarded on a merit pay basis. The metric would likely be the number of sales made in a given period, with a percentage of each sale paid out as commission.
