Layoff

Updated on: October 14, 2026 Sneha Gondhale 1 min read

A layoff is the suspension or permanent termination of a worker’s employment by their employer. It does not happen because the worker did something wrong. People get laid off because the business’s sales have declined, it is in financial trouble, it has gone bankrupt, or it cannot get hold of a key component or raw material needed to make its products.
