Informal Communication

Updated on: October 14, 2026 Sneha Gondhale 1 min read

Informal communication in the workplace is communication that happens outside the company’s formal communication structures. Some people call it the ‘grapevine.’

It can happen in the same setting as formal communication, like a private meeting room during an appraisal. A manager might run the appraisal, then once it wraps up, mention something personal to the employee that was never meant for general workplace discussion or to be recorded formally.
