Human Capital Management (HCM)
Human capital management (HCM) is the systematic practice of recruiting, managing, and developing a workforce. It treats employees as assets worth investing in, with the goal of getting the most organizational value out of their skills and contributions. That responsibility usually falls on a company’s HR department, since HR generally has the biggest say in who gets hired, how well talent is managed, and how seriously employee development gets taken.
In practice, HCM covers a wide range of HR functions, including recruitment, training, performance management, and talent retention, all tied back to the company’s broader goals. The underlying idea is that treating people as valuable assets, rather than just costs, leads to better individual and collective results, which is why HCM also puts a lot of weight on strategic workforce planning.
