Form W-9

Updated on: October 14, 2026 Sneha Gondhale 1 min read

Form W-9 is an IRS tax document that collects taxpayer identification information from U.S. persons and entities receiving payments. It captures details like name, address, taxpayer identification number, and tax classification status for income reporting.

Businesses use the W-9 to gather what they need to prepare 1099 forms at year-end for contractors, vendors, and service providers. A completed W-9 helps companies comply with IRS reporting requirements and avoid backup withholding penalties on payments to third parties.
