Form 1099
A 1099 form is an IRS tax document that reports income paid to non-employees, including independent contractors, freelancers, and vendors. Businesses issue it to document payments to people or entities that provided services without being classified as employees, and it captures the payment amount, recipient information, and tax identification numbers for IRS reporting.
Recipients use their 1099 forms to report that income on their tax returns, track related business expenses, and stay compliant with federal tax reporting requirements.
There are several versions of the 1099 form for different kinds of income. Form 1099-NEC reports non-employee compensation above $600, Form 1099-MISC covers rent, royalties, and other miscellaneous payments, Form 1099-INT documents interest payments, and Form 1099-DIV reports dividend distributions from investments.
