Forced Ranking

Updated on: October 14, 2026 Sneha Gondhale 1 min read

Forced ranking, also called a vitality curve, is a controversial management tool that measures, ranks, and grades employee performance by comparing people against each other instead of against a fixed standard. Under this process, employees get divided into three groups: A, B, and C.

Group A, the top 20%, covers employees who are the most engaged, motivated, passionate, collaborative, and committed. Group B, the middle 70%, covers employees who are less engaged or motivated but still matter to the company simply because there are so many of them. Group C, the bottom 10%, covers employees generally seen as underperforming or disengaged.
