Federal ID Number (EIN)

Updated on: October 14, 2026 Sneha Gondhale 1 min read

A Federal ID Number, or Employer Identification Number (EIN), is a nine-digit number the IRS assigns to U.S. businesses and other entities. It works much like a Social Security number, but for a business instead of an individual, and it is used for tax-related matters.

Businesses need an EIN for tax filing, opening bank accounts, hiring employees, and other financial transactions.
