Direct Report

Updated on: October 14, 2026 Sneha Gondhale 1 min read

A direct report is an employee who reports formally to a specific manager in an organization’s hierarchy. The manager has authority over that employee’s work assignments, performance reviews, and career development decisions, which is what sets a direct report apart from someone who just works nearby or collaborates occasionally.

Org charts use this relationship to show who answers to whom.
