Career Path Ratio

Career path ratio measures how much an employee is growing within a company, combining both upward moves (promotions) and sideways ones (transfers). HR teams track it to get a read on employee development and engagement, since a healthy mix of movement tends to signal people are actually advancing rather than stalling out in one role.

There’s a practical payoff too: when people see a real path forward internally, companies spend less on hiring and training replacements. It also feeds into retention, since employees who can see where they’re headed tend to stick around.

The formula:

Career Path Ratio = Total Promotions ÷ (Total Transfers + Total Promotions)
