Career Lattice

Updated on: October 13, 2026 Sneha Gondhale 1 min read

A career lattice is a development approach that lets employees move through their career in more than just the traditional vertical path. It is flexible: growth can happen vertically, horizontally, or diagonally, not just straight up.

That is the key difference from a career ladder, which is rigid by design and only allows movement upward. A lattice opens up a lot more room for employees to grow across the whole organization, not just up one track.

Organizations tend to introduce career lattices because they are looking for ways to boost employee productivity and support development more broadly.
