Bias Detection in AI HR Systems
Bias detection in AI HR systems means testing whether an AI model's outputs differ unfairly across groups, by gender, age, ethnicity, or location, in decisions like candidate ranking, promotion readiness, or attrition risk. It relies on fairness metrics like disparate impact and demographic parity, checked before deployment and tracked continuously after.
Two stages of detection
Detection happens in two stages. Pre-deployment testing runs the model against balanced or synthetic datasets to check that similar candidates get similar outcomes regardless of protected attributes. That is exactly why the Omnibus allows special-category data: to make this kind of testing possible in the first place.
Post-deployment monitoring tracks subgroup performance once the system is live, because bias can creep in as the population or the data shifts. Mitigation techniques include reweighting training data and adversarial debiasing.
The common misconception is that stripping protected attributes out of the data removes bias. It does not: proxies like postcode, gaps in employment, or school names carry the same signal.
Niyuk applies fairness-aware training, curates datasets for demographic balance, and monitors disparate impact and demographic parity across gender, role, and geography in high-sensitivity areas like talent recommendations.
