Base Wage Rate

Updated on: October 13, 2026 Sneha Gondhale 1 min read

A base wage rate is the minimum, fixed amount an employer pays an employee for their work, before anything else gets added on: overtime, bonuses, or benefits. The employer and employee agree on this base rate upfront, usually as an hourly or monthly figure, and it gets written into the employment contract or collective bargaining agreement.

Everything else in an employee's total compensation builds on top of this base rate.
