AOR (Agent of Record)

Updated on: October 13, 2026 Sneha Gondhale 1 min read

An agent of record (AOR) is a licensed insurance professional or brokerage firm with the legal authority to act on a client's behalf in insurance matters, including binding coverage, making policy changes, handling claims, and collecting commissions from insurance carriers. The AOR relationship is a formal business partnership where the agent represents the client's interests while managing their insurance portfolio.

Once established, the AOR designation stays in place until the client formally transfers it to another agent or ends the relationship. In practice, that means dedicated insurance representation: policy reviews, coverage analysis, claims assistance, renewal negotiations, and comparing rates across multiple carriers.
