Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)
Alternative Dispute Resolution, or ADR, covers the methods people and organizations use to resolve legal conflicts outside of a courtroom. Mediation and arbitration are the two most common forms: a neutral third party either helps both sides negotiate their way to an agreement, or actually makes the decision for them.
ADR tends to be faster, cheaper, and less formal than going to court, which is why a lot of parties choose it over litigation when they have the option.
