Affirmative Action

Updated on: October 13, 2026 Sneha Gondhale 1 min read

Affirmative action is a broad term for policies that try to open up more opportunities, in education, employment, and business, for groups that have historically faced discrimination or been underrepresented. The goal is to push back against that history, not just wait for it to fix itself.

In practice, that can mean setting diversity goals, running targeted outreach programs, or giving some preference to candidates from underrepresented backgrounds, whether that shows up in college admissions or in hiring.
