Boomerang Employee

A boomerang employee is someone who leaves a company voluntarily and later returns to work there again. The term is straightforward: they come back like a boomerang.

The reasons for the initial departure vary. Some leave for what looks like a better opportunity and find it doesn’t live up to expectations. Others step away for personal reasons: parenting, a spouse’s relocation, a medical situation, or simply needing time away. Some leave to try freelancing, launch a startup, pursue further education, or follow a passion, and eventually decide they want to return to stable employment.

What makes boomerang employees worth paying attention to is that they already know the organization. Rehiring them tends to be faster and cheaper than hiring someone new, and they often return with broader experience and a clearer sense of what they value in a workplace.
