Backup Server

A backup server stores copies of data, files, databases, and other critical information so that it can be recovered if something goes wrong. Hardware failures, technical errors, and disasters can all result in data loss. A backup server exists to make sure that loss isn’t permanent.

The setup can be on-premises or remote. An on-premises backup server sits within the local network, keeping everything in-house. A cloud-based or remote backup server stores data off-site, typically in a data center, which adds a layer of protection against physical damage to the primary location.

Both approaches combine hardware and software to handle the storage and retrieval of backed-up data across connected devices and systems.
