An Employee Assistance Program, or EAP, is a workplace support initiative designed to help employees deal with personal problems before those problems affect their work.

The logic is simple. When someone is dealing with stress, relationship difficulties, financial pressure, or mental health challenges, their focus and productivity suffer. EAPs give employees somewhere to turn, typically through confidential counseling and consulting services where they can talk through what they’re facing and get practical guidance from trained professionals.

The benefits run in both directions. Employees get support when they need it most. Employers see reduced absenteeism and steadier productivity, since unaddressed personal problems tend to compound over time. Beyond the immediate relief, EAPs also tend to improve employee engagement over the long run, which makes them more than just a crisis resource.
