Behavioral competency

Behavioral competency refers to the personality traits, habits, and interpersonal skills that predict how well someone will perform in a given role. Unlike technical skills, which can be tested directly, behavioral competencies describe how a person approaches their work and interacts with others.

They vary by role. Strong communication matters most in sales and marketing. Negotiation ability is central to a sales function. Creativity is what you’re assessing in a designer. Quick thinking under pressure is what separates effective support staff from ineffective ones.

In hiring, behavioral competencies give recruiters a framework for evaluating candidates beyond qualifications and experience, looking at whether someone’s natural working style fits what the role actually demands.
