Absenteeism

Absenteeism means employees are regularly missing work, whether they planned to or not. Planned absences have a paper trail: annual leave, parental leave, scheduled medical appointments. Unplanned absences don’t: a sick child, a family emergency, a personal crisis that arrived without warning. Unauthorized absence with no communication at all sits at the far end of the problem.

The Indian Factories Act, 1948 defines it plainly: absence is when an employee fails to show up for scheduled work that the employer has available and the employee knows about.

In India, absenteeism rates tend to run higher than in many comparable economies. The costs fall on both sides. Employers lose output and pay more to cover gaps. Employees who go absent frequently enough put their own positions at risk.

What it does to a workplace

Absenteeism rarely stays contained. When someone doesn’t show up, their work either waits or lands on someone else. Neither is good. Output drops, teammates stretch thin, morale takes a hit. Customer-facing teams feel it quickly. The labor cost of covering absences through overtime or temporary staff adds up faster than most managers track. And for the employee, a pattern of unexplained absences tends to end one way.

Why it happens

Workplace harassment is a real driver. Employees dealing with bullying, hostile management, or discrimination find reasons not to come in.

Caregiving responsibilities don’t pause for work schedules. When someone has a young child, an elderly parent, or both, and no backup, taking the day is sometimes the only option.

Mental health problems account for a large share of unplanned absence that goes unreported. Depression, anxiety, and burnout keep people home. The stigma around disclosing them keeps those absences off the official record.

Illness and injury are more straightforward but no less significant. Physical health problems pull people out of work regardless of policy.

Workload itself causes absence. When people are running at capacity for months with no relief, some eventually stop showing up. It’s not laziness. It’s a system that ran out of slack.
